‘Shirkin’ the Ghosts of the Meantime’, Fugitive Papers, no.4, Summer 2013
John Duncan's photograph from Boomtown (2002) accompanied this essay. The essay dealt with my weariness towards an emancipatory rhetoric flourishing in current cultural theory. The photograph captures the tension between grim circumstance and the realm of the aesthetic. I sensed I was closer to the latter by the essay's close. I was quickly returned to the former when the Arts Council did not continue its support for Fugitive Papers.
